The Power of Running

Introduction

The power of running lies in its benefits to physical and mental health and well-being. Although physical fitness and strength are important reasons to run, it is how running makes me feel that is most valuable.

The Physical Benefits of Running

Running is a full-body workout that engages the cardiovascular system, strengthens muscles, and improves endurance. It boosts metabolism, burns calories and promotes overall physical health. Moreover, running releases endorphins, also known as “feel-good” hormones, which can elevate mood and reduce stress.

Running is not therapy, but it is therapeutic

Ultra-runner, coach, speaker, and author, Allie Bailey asserts in her book “There is No Wall: Running Won’t Save You“, that running is not therapy.

Running is definitely therapeutic, but confusing it with actual therapy is naive and unhelpful. Therapy is what helps me to understand myself, my emotions, feelings, experiences, challenges. Therapy also provides me with tools and methods and more adaptive ways to cope. A highly skilled clinical psychologist provides me with therapy, but running helps me to keep going to therapy (so does their therapy dog, Hachiko).

Finding Clarity Through the Meditative Movement of Running

Running isn’t just about putting one foot in front of the other. It’s a way to clear my mind and find clarity amidst life’s chaos. The rhythm of my footsteps creates a meditative state where I can process my thoughts and emotions, feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. Running allows me to clear my mind and focus on the present moment, helping to release worries and distractions.

To harness the healing power of running, it’s essential to approach each run with mindfulness and intention. Pay attention to your breath, the sensation of your feet hitting the ground, and the rhythm of your stride. Allow yourself to be fully present in the moment, letting go of worries and distractions.

Pushing Past Limits and Building Resilience

Every run presents an opportunity to push myself physically and mentally further. It’s a chance to challenge my limits, break through barriers, and prove that I am capable of more than I ever imagined. The sense of accomplishment from reaching new milestones fuels my motivation and drive to keep going. It complements therapy because it is a tangible way for me to experience and understand how much stronger I am than I can sometimes think.

Through running, I have learned the power of resilience. Every step is a lesson in perseverance, discipline, and strength. Enduring the physical challenges of running has translated into mental fortitude that helps me navigate life’s obstacles gracefully and determinedly.

Boosting Self-Esteem

When you lace up your running shoes and hit the pavement, your body releases endorphins, natural mood lifters. These feel-good chemicals can help reduce stress and anxiety levels, leaving you feeling more relaxed and at ease.

Running often gives me a sense of accomplishment and empowerment that helps boost my self-esteem and resilience. Whether facing a difficult day or overcoming a personal challenge, running can provide solace and strength to keep moving forward.

Connecting with Nature

Many runners enjoy working outdoors, which allows them to connect with nature and breathe in fresh air. Being surrounded by greenery and natural landscapes can calm the mind and promote inner peace.

Running allows me to connect with the world around me. The feeling of the wind on my face, the sound of my feet hitting the pavement, and the sights of nature passing by all combine to create a sensory experience that grounds me in the present moment. It reminds us of the beauty and wonder surrounding us, inspiring gratitude and appreciation.

Social Benefits of Running

Joining a running group or participating in races can give you a sense of community and belonging. Sharing the running experience with others can strengthen social connections and support your mental well-being. Parkrun is a free timed 5 kilometer run held every Saturday morning in parks across the country (and world!). Parkrun welcomes anyone to walk, jog, run, race, volunteer, or spectate.

My husband who would often like to classify himself as an anti-people non-runner, will regularly join me at Parkrun on a Saturday morning to harness the social benefits and power of running.

Each run is an opportunity to learn more about myself, push past my limits, and connect with the world around me. Running has become an essential part of who I am, shaping me into a stronger, more resilient, and more grounded person.
